[ Veterans' Aid and Attendance Special Pension ]

Eligibility for the Aid and Attendance Special Pension is based on three criteria: veteran status, health status, and financial status.

Veteran Status – To be eligible for the Aid and Attendance Special Pension, the veteran must have served at least 90 consecutive days of active service, served at least one day during active war time, and been honorably discharged.

Health Status – To be eligible for the Aid and Attendance Special Pension, veterans or their surviving spouses must either require the regular assistance of another person for the activities of daily living, be bedridden, be a resident of a nursing home or assisted living community because of mental (dementia/Alzheimer’s) or physical incapacity, or be blind.

Financial Status – The financial qualifications are determined by the Veterans Administration. Generally speaking, the VA will compare applicant’s assets and income against the total cost of their care. Documentation of all care expenses is crucial in the application process.

In 2011, the Aid and Attendance Special Pension benefit rates are:

Up to $1,644 per month for a single veteran
Up to $1,949 per month for a married veteran or a veteran with one dependent
Up to $1,057 per month for a surviving spouse
